The first thing I actually made was the dragon's mouth, and here it is laid out on the desk. It's made of one continuous piece of soft cardboard (the kind cereal boxes are made of), with two large pieces of foam glued to it. On top of them are glued two smaller pieces of foam, bunched up to create space for my fingers (upper jaw) and thumb (lower jaw). A very simple but exceedingly effective and performable mouth.
