Here I'm reverse-engineering a pattern for the red-orange silk that's going to cover the head, by pinning silk to the foam and tracing. Each piece of silk will eventually be double-layered, since otherwise the silk is so thin that you can see right through it.
The original plan was to sew pieces of silk together and slide them over the foam head like a sleeve, but I quickly discovered that that wouldn't work -- it's nearly impossible to sew four layers of silk together along an irregular line, and even if I managed to do that, the sleeve would still be too loose in some places and too tight in others. So I ended up doing something different...
