The solution (which I figured out from helping to build bamboo-and-tissue-paper lanterns for the 2007 Lumière Festival) was to glue each double-layered piece to the foam. The glue was placed at the sewn edges of the pieces of silk, and it hardly shows through at all. And this way I had complete control and could make the silk as tight as I wanted. And that's what I'm doing in this picture.
